Green Globe. Perennial. Likes a long growing season with
mild winters and rich soil. Easy to grow and quite delicious. Simply
boil and eat the fleshy outer leaves like asparagus, dipped in
butter. A gourmet's delight, grown on such an attractive plant that
it is often found in the flower garden. 3 to 6 foot plants with 3 to
4 inch heads.
Mary Washington. Perennial. Resistance to some rusts and
blight, 60-day cutting season, most popular U.S. variety and the
standard commercial strain, early long straight spears with tight
tips. Pour warm water over seeds. When cool pour off water. Do this
two more times then sow seeds 2 in. deep. Cut asparagus after 3
years.
Early Wonder Tall Top. Dark purplish-red, 3 in. flattened globes, used as a first early variety or for a midsummer, bunching beet for home or market gardens. Tall vigorous dark-green 16-18 in. tops tinged with maroon, excellent for greens. Beet greens are very nutritious. One cup of beet greens has more iron than a hamburger patty. 54 days.
Detroit Dark Red. Nearly globe shaped, blood-red 2.5 to 3 in. diameter solid roots, main crop canner for home gardens. The standard for beets. 60 days.
De Cicco. Open-Pollinated. Old reliable European variety, 2-3
feet tall light green plants. Small main heads followed by many side
shoots. Harvest main head when about 3 inches to encourage side shoot
production. Good for spring or fall crop. Non-uniform in maturity,
more variable and more productive than hybrids, excellent quality. 48
days.
Raab. Rapini. Italian heirloom broccoli. The tender stems,
buds, and flowers have a wonderfully delicate slightly bitter/spicy/peppery
broccoli flavor which can be enjoyed in salads, stir-fried, or steamed. Likes
cool weather so sow the seeds in the very early spring or wait until late summer
for a fall crop. Harvest just before the flowers open. Also known as asparagus
broccoli. 45 days.
Catskill/Long Island Improved. Open-pollinated. 50 to 100 dark green, tight, tender 1.25 to 1.5 in. heads which mature in succession on strong, compact, 20 to 24 in. stalks. Begin harvest with lower sprouts and work up the stalk. Good producer for spring or fall harvest. Good freezer. High in vitamin C and low in calories. 85 - 110 days.
